Lawful permanent residents (LPR), orr "green card" holders, are allowed to reside and work permanently in the United States. They can engage in routine personal and business travel to and from the U.S., but there are restrictions on their ability to remain abroad for extended durations. They do not hold the same privileges as U.S. citizens, in that they cannot vote in federal or state elections and, in certain circumstances, they can lose the right to remain in the United States.
Gained primarily through employment-based or family-based sponsorship, as well as the diversity visa lottery
Employment-based self-sponsorship is allowed in the national interest waiver (NIW), extraordinary ability (EA), and investor (EB5) categories
General requirements differ for each category and can be viewed under the corresponding employment- and family-based sections of our website
